What is a moodling? This is a question I get on a regular basis. Here is your answer. :)
Moodling comes from the book If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland. She writes, "So you see imagination needs moodling-long, inefficient, happy idling, dawdling and puttering."
Ms. Ueland was born in 1891 and wrote If You Want to Write in 1938. She was a writer, editor and teacher of writing. While her book is directed at writers she does not differentiate writers from other creatives. She writes, "Whenever I say 'writing' in this book, I also mean anything that you love and want to do or make."
She has two main themes to the book, everyone is creative and if you want to write.....you must write and write often.
If you want to be creative....you must create on a regular, daily basis. When you 1st begin your work may not be very good. In fact it might suck. But there is value in the doing. Of allowing yourself the space to be creative. Allowing ourselves to slow down long enough to allow creativity to flourish. To create with our hearts and not our minds. Time to quiet the voices and allow something else to take its place.
Over time we learn to fine tune our craft, we get better. But there is no shortcut to this process. We must begin where everyone begins. That is the essence of this blog. To create a place where we celebrate creativity in all its glory. The good, the bad and the ugly. A place where we create from the heart, something that is real and full of life.
I love Ms. Ueland's book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to add more creativity to your life. It is hard not to be inspired by her words. I have often said that creativity and imagination are what push us forward. It is the best of us. Why would I NOT want more of that in my life?
Now you know the answer.
